I need to set up a server because I need to provide on-line space for streamed showreels for actors. Unfortunately I don't know the first thing about servers. I searched on the net for information, but all I get is either a monthly prices, or something that looks like a pc but not quite. Is a server something you run from home or is it something virtual you buy (a bit like a domain)? I would really appreciate if you knew where to get informtion about servers for beginners. Thanks.

a server is a computer system that provides services to other computing systems—called clients—over a network. The term server can refer to hardware (such as a Sun computer system) or software (such as an RDBMS server).

A server is a computer used for the purpose of being the hub of where other computers go to retrieve information. It can be a PC that allows other PC's to access it. Any PC that centrally stores data for othe PC's to access is a server. The more access-ing that is done the more powerful the server needs to be. For minor stuff the server can also be a PC you use for other stuff. All depends on your needs. A powerful server will be totally "blinged" out with high speed components, cooling, etc.

If you are trying to setup web space..... you need to have a place on the internet that can handle the ability to store all your data and be able to "stream" it to users efficiently and at a decent speed. Contact your ISP or webpace host and talk about it. Unfortunately there are tons of those people, and finding the best deal for the best quality is the challenge.

Server is a loose term, but what it comes down to is it is a box, somewhere, that 'serves' information to anything configured to get information from it.
Yahoo answers resides on a server, and your web browser requests information from it, and the server 'serves' up the information that you request.
you're probably better off having someone host the server for you, you can usually get something pretty decent for a reasonable price. Most services will help get your site up, and even provide you a domain name to make it easier for people to get to. Don't even try to setup something reliable from home, let a pro service do it for you.

Servers can be either male or female. Their cost is based upon quality of service given. Unless you are with a group of eight or more and then it's fifteen percent of total. Servers to be avoided are in France or Frenchies anywhere. They're very snobbish and consider that they are doing you a great favor. Beginning servers just have to get in, get going and see if they like it. Hope this helps !

yes u could use your machine for the storage and then get a buy a domain name and give the domain company your ip address so u will be hosting from your machine.
you will need to install apache server
http://www.apache.org/
and then u will need, to install some security on to the machine to stop hackers, and dns attacks.
and then u would need to design the webpage on your machine.

Your best bet is to call a local computer service company and ask them about hosting this for you.
