The 1944 Canadian V nickel is made of chrome plated steel. It could have tarnished to a bronze color with the help of some dirt. The 1943 nickel was made in a brass alloy called tombac which turned a bronze color. There are a few 1944 coins on a tombac blank. They are very rare and no new ones have shown up for some time. A magnet will stick to the steel one. The war years really caused a lot of strange coins to be minted by a lot of countries. If the coin is dirty, make sure the date is 1944 and not 1943. Do not clean it, take it too a dealer who deals in Canadian coins and have him check the date with his microscope, if you are having problems and he can also help in checking out the coin. A lot of U.S. coin dealers do not deal with Canadian coins. Of course if the magnet sticks then it was the dirt that gave it that color.

1944 Canadian Nickel

Hi. I am a coin dealer in the Midwest US. There are two varieties of nickels made in 1944. One was made of a tombac (brass) composition, and the other was made of steel with a nickel plating. The steel piece is very common and when corroded can look like the brass, which is rare. Easy way to tell...use a magnet on the coin...if it sticks, it's the common steel one, worth less than a dollar in value. If it doesn't stick then it MIGHT be the brass piece, which, if genuine, could be worth a few thousand dollars. If you suspect it might be the brass piece, take it to a dealer for evaluation, and consider submitting it for authentication to a certification service. My best guess, though, is that you have a corroded steel piece, as the brass ones are quite rare. Hope this info helped you out.

Another option is a library and a good catalogue. Condition is very important Reid
