I guess the main question is... who was there first, what are their ages, how did you obtain the pets- adoption from humane society or breeder- so on.

all of these things can have an affect on pet to pet relations.

They can get along... but it all depends on asking the right questions.

like when you adopt from the humane society...

1. spayed or neutered?
2. Does he/she get along with children?
3. Does he/she get along with other dogs/cats (and vise versa depending on what breed you're adopting)
4. What age are they?
5. are they playful or more laid back

question 3 and 5 are very important if you're introducing a new pet to an already existing pet who may feel a bit territorial and may not enjoy someone butting into their quiet time wanting to play or share their space.

I don't know how old your dog and cat are, or how long they've been together... if they've been together for a while, they may already be set into their personalities and their roles and as long as they're not hurting eachother- just let the cat assert his or her dominance and as long as the dog backs down, all is fine.

otherwise, here's a site that may help you if one or the other is fairly new to the house, that may still give you a chance to help them get along.

It's fine. If the cat isn't physically hurting the dog, then don't worry about it. Cats and dogs do that. My little black cat swats at my rottweiler all the time... they don't get hurt, it's nothing serious.
