A toothbrush moustache, also known as a Hitler moustache or a Chaplin, is a bushy moustache shaved except for three to five centimetres in the centre of the lip. The sides of the moustache are vertical rather than tapered.

This moustache is most famous for having been worn by film star Charlie Chaplin and later by dictator Adolf Hitler. Chaplin took advantage of this unlikely similarity between the two men for his role in The Great Dictator. The style is now unpopular due to its strong association with Hitler.

In China a trimmer version of this moustache is stereotypical of Japanese people, especially of Japanese soldiers.

Other famous people known to sport a toothbrush moustache include:

Alexander Vasilyevich Alexandrov
Merle Allin
Sepp Dietrich
Gottfried Feder
Max Fleischer
Adolf Galland
Oliver Hardy
Martin Heidegger
Ron Mael
Zoltán Meskó
Robert Mugabe
Julius Kambarage Nyerere
Marcel Pilet-Golaz
Karl Plagge
Sayyid Qutb
Fritz Sauckel
Julius Schreck
Michael Vale (as Fred the Baker)
Stefan Zweig

An extreme variant of the toothbrush moustache narrows it to the philtrum only. Robert Mugabe is noted for this style.

This is a very interesting concept really, because yes, they were a popular fashion for many men, and who knows? They might have continued to be considered to be a viable style. Hitler, took away that style from the world when he adapted it as his "look". He also took away the swastika from the world when his party appropriated it. The swastika used to represent balance and was a very positive symbol for thousands of years! It was also just a really great design, but not any more!! The Nazis did not just murder people, but also styles and symbols!!
