Sometimes how we see ourselves, which was formed by our parents accepting or rejecting who we were then - can be a problem.
If it's true clinical depression, he should see a physician and start a regimen of some SSRI - selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor. Something like Zoloft would be an SSRI his physician might prescribe.
If it's purely mental, counseling might help, but overall you have to start re-shaping your self-image actively, on your own. No one can do that for you. There are so many books on it at Borders you'll be amazed. Take a tour to the bookstore with him and try something out.

If you are depressed about man, then you need to get help, and since you know why, because of neglect, when you was a child, all of this time, you should have gotten help. But it is never too late. Go and get help, speak to some one, the reason you keep having problems, is because of the baggage, that you keep bring into your relationships.

Grow-up!
First of all your a grown-up now.You make your own decisions and choices. It is no longer your parents fault for your life being in the condition it is in.
Blaming mommy and daddy for everything is not going to work with me.
OK. They were terrible parents or whatever. You have a decision to make either you can be just like them or you can be different. I hope you choose to be different and make yourself into a better person because of this experience.

Get over it. Seriously, you were a child. You're an adult now. Move on.
