Since Europeans took over the Americas.

Overpopulation has actually decreased somewhat in recent years, but there are still close to 5 million animals being killed in shelters each year. Most of this is due to people refusing to alter their pets and from puppy mill/Backyard breeders who breed for fun and money. People who think that just because they have an AKC dog, that she should be bred, are great contributors to the 25% of those who are killed in shelter being purebred.

Recently, the shift has been towards little dogs and designer dogs. Thank you Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Mischa Barton, and Britney Spears. So now, unethical breeders are buying genetically unsound dogs and breeding them over and over and over and over. Once the buyer of the puppy moves on to college, moves into a 'no pets' apartment, or the puppy pees on her Jimmy Choos, they dump the dog at the humane society. Sinec they didn't buy from a good breeder, they have no other choice (other than killing the dog).

The genreal public and people on here don't help much. When someone comes in asking for help on breeding their dog or help on pregnancy, they simply give the answers. Anyone who is on here asking for help on breeding should not be breeding. It's that simple. Giving them the answer only makes it easier for them to overbreed unsound dogs. When you see those types of questions, ask them why they aren't talking to their breeder mentors. Ask them why they aren't calling their national breed club. Ask them why they aren't asking the other breeders that they know and compete with in dog shows? Let them know that irresponsible breeding is unethical and help them learn how to be a responsible breeder or why they should fix their dog.

Hopefully, education will help teach children when they are young that life is not something to be taken lightly and that until there are 0 shelter animals, we should take our stewardship of animals very seriously. Hopefully, the USDA will crack down on puppy mills and backyard breeders, instituting some sort of legislation to prevent this overbreeding. Spread the word to do your part.

My canines replaced right into a domestic dog once I have been given her, so the cats have been greater than she. She nonetheless thinks she's an identical length as a cat (she's a 60+ pound retriever) and tries to sit down down on the settee with the cats. The cats groom the precise of her head, and she or he tries to reciprocate, even nonetheless the cats do no longer like it too properly. If a canines isn't raised around cats and vice versa, they won't get alongside. yet while they advance used to a minimum of one yet another, they grow to be speedy friends.

I think it was always a bit of a problem. It's only now that as a nation we're secure & educated enough to see it. Same goes for animal cruelty, withholding vet care from a pet, or starving an animal. In a 3rd world nation most people can barely feed themselves, and they can't/don't care how their animals feel. But America is no longer starving. We have vets, medicine, and a better developed sense of what should be allowed to happen to stray pets. Maybe one day we'll get civilized enough where no pet goes without vet care when he's suffering, livestock are given humane care, and people don't get pets who cannot be responsible for them.
