What did Jane Fonda Do that made people pissed off?

I mentioned Jane Fonda to my roomate and he indicated his strong dislike for Jane Fonda. I get the same reaction from two other people I know. Is this a general thing or what? Why?

During her earlier days in the late 1960s, as a protest against the Vietnam War, she travelled to North Vietnam. While there, in her words, she naively allowed herself to be used by the communist regime. She was made to view prisoners who were in bad physical shape, and she allowed herself to be photographed in a helmet and sitting on an anti-aircraft gun (many of the prisoners she viewed were in fact pilots who had been shot down).

However, there are some myths perpetrated by some people about Jane Fonda that simply are not true. There has been no evidence from any of the returned prisoners who were present when she was there that she surrendered notes from the Americans to the North Vietnamese leading to executions or tortures (apparently what she did was not bad enough, and something truly horrible had to be made up about her).

Next, while the prisoners were unhappy about being used for propaganda purposes by the communist regime, they were given improved treatment prior to visitations by such American celebrities simply so the captors could pretend they were behaving humanely (from NPR).

She has since given a sort of half-hearted apology which did not really satisfy anyone. However, most of the veterans I have spoken to had even worse things to say about the behavior of various veterans' organizations, which for many years refused to either serve them or even recognize them as veterans.

Jane Fonda had the guts to protest the stupidest war of our lifetime. She was dissing the war and the people responsible for it - namely Nixon. She sympathized with people who were having the crap bombed out of their people and their country in a senseless manufactured war that never ever should have been allowed to happen. Jane Fonda was Waaaaaaay ahead of her time as an activist, as a feminist and as a brilliant outspoken citizen who cared enough about our soldiers, about our citizens and about our country to PROTEST BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY the criminal and unthinkably heinous Vietnam War. She was right. Jane Fonda cared and cares deeply about human rights and she was and is braver and smarter and stronger and more direct than most at a time when women had no voice. And she was so comitted to her anti war principles she was willing to risk her Hollywood career and her reputation to take a STAND against that evil war and the corrupt establishment who created it. She was a vital voice in the anti war movement and Waaaay ahead of her time. And anyone too stupid not to see that is a fool. I applaud Jane Fonda and salute her as a great American who cared enough to take a STAND against a heinous war we never should have been in. And she is a wayshower still. For the American Sheeple must ALL WAKE UP AND STAND UP and protest what is currently going on in our country that should scare the pants off of anyone with half a conscience or a brain.

"Hanoi Jane"

Fonda visited Hanoi in July 1972. She is credited with publicly exposing Richard Nixon's potential strategy of bombing the dikes in Vietnam. At the time, she was called a liar by United Nations ambassador George H. W. Bush. Bush was intending to provide evidence of US innocence, but cancelled the press conference after Fonda released filmed evidence, with Bush saying, "I think that the best thing I can do on the subject is to shut up." In 2004, her former husband Tom Hayden renewed claims that "Fonda was right and Bush was lying".

In Vietnam, Fonda was photographed seated on an anti-aircraft battery used against American aircrews. She also participated in several radio broadcasts on behalf of the Communist regime, asking US aircrews to consider the consequences of their actions. In her 2005 autobiography, she states that she was manipulated into sitting on the battery, and claims to have been immediately horrified at the implications of the pictures. Fonda says that it was not what was in her heart at all, and wasn't the reason why she was even there. She was there to film evidence of the Nixon Administration's plan to blow up the dikes, (a plan that Fonda says "Johnson, to his credit decided not to do"), and the lie the administration had been giving to the public, that troop returns were imminent. She expressed regret for her actions many times over the years, but some Americans remain hostile to her. "I've learned that a picture does not capture what was actually in your heart."

During the Vietnam war, she actively supported the enemy. She went so far as to visit Hanoi and speak openly in favor of the communists and against our military. The communists used this as a big propaganda tool.

She has no business still being a citizen of this country. It is fine to voice an unpopular opinion. Giving direct aid and comfort to the enemy at a time of war is simply treason.

BAck iduring the Vietnam war she turned in American soldiers to the enemy, that is why many Americans ; many military personnel totally hates her for doing that. No matter how many times she apologizes, she will be hated for what she had done. Seh should have never turned in our men to the enemy that was very un-American of her to do that. She definately stepped over the line there. My ex-father in law served 2 times in Vietnam and was totally disgusted with her actions as he had lost many friends over there.

I replied to her submit on the following. and that i expressed my perspectives of her, to her, that i have been festering over because the 1960's. I enable her comprehend how a lot i quite despise her, and reminded her of the damage she led to such diverse GI's contained in the Vietnam warfare. She is a good person. A lot of the people thyat do not like her are conservatives because of political activities she was involved in. She is good though.
