I keep reading that there shouldn't be a smell to the newborn's poop but we think he smells. Is something wrong. I think we are going to call our pediatrician anyway.

Everyone's poop smells. My kid's newborn poop was the nastiest. It's normal.

Well when my daughter was a newborn I never recal smelling her poop. Now that she's 18 months it smells but I don't remember it ever smelling until she was about 2-3 months.

Formula fed babies smell worse than breastfed babies.

Personally I find newborn breastfed baby poop smells like unpopped microwave popcorn. Not strongly though. And I wouldn't say it is really smells, I mean everything smells a little bit, except maybe glass. Baby farts though sometimes those can clear the room.

Yes, my newborns bowel movements smelled and I too was a bit confused because all the books say theyre not supposed to if youre breastfeeding. So we went to the doctor who sighed and said it WAS poop, you know :) Babys poop, even at day 3 smells, breastfeeding or bottlefeeding. Dont fret! (but lord i know thats easy to say but impossible when youre a new parent :0))

It does have a smell, it's just not really, really strong. It's ok for it to smell a little, especially if you're bottle feeding. "No smell" just means that it doesn't run you out of the room like a baby who's started eating solids. Now that smells!

If a baby is formula fed then yes there is a smell to the BM, if it's breast fed exclusively, then normally, no there isn't too much of a smell. The consistancy of a formula fed baby's BM vs. a breastfed baby's BM is also conciderably different. A breastfed baby's BM is more yellowish in color and "seedy" looking. Whereas a formula fed baby's BM ranges from the yellowish color to a darker brown (most iron containing formulas cause this).

It shouldn't smell like grown-up poop, but, it will have some smell to it. If it's REALLY offensive there might be a problem.

Yes, my hubby thinks that a newborns is worse than anything, he would rather change a 3 year old than a 1 week old
