I'm Canadian, but all this talk about "bringing the Cup home" or whatever is just a load of crap. The great majority of the league's teams are based in America, so of course the odds are that an American team would win the Cup, especially during the pre-cap years when they were more likely to benefit from their profits by building better teams than their Canadian counterparts.
The Flames and Oilers both lost good series to better teams, and the officials didn't cost either of them a chance at the Cup. It will again be difficult for a Canadian team this year, simply because we don't have a plethora of good teams at this time.
If you want to make sure the Cup stays in Canada, then maybe we should remove all the American teams and just have a Canadian league. I'm sure it would be equally as lame as our football league, one where the American product is clearly better.
I want the Canadiens to win the Cup, but if they don't then I don't care if it goes to an American team. Last time I looked, every NHL team was one with international flavor, and that counts a lot more than where the Cup actually resides.

I laugh at people who say the Oilers, people have been saying that the Oilers are going to be a powerhouse in 3-4 years 5 years ago. Looking at the playoffs this year the Flames are in rough, as with the Oilers, the Habs are small and easy to push around, the Sens only beat Montreal for that reason, the Canucks are perennial chokers and their window to win the cup is believed by many to have already closed and the Jets aren't anything special either. Call me a homer but the Leafs were 10 minutes away from knocking off the heavily favoured Bruins, where's everyone who was calling for the Leafs out in 4,5 and 6? the youngest team in the 2013 playoffs pushed the seasoned veteran Bruins to game 7 and came within inches of beating them, loads of young talent including 2012 top 5 pick Morgan Rielly coming up next year, this is a team that will only get better and better as the years go on now. Answer - Leafs.

First off I don't understand why it's not "right" to have the Stanley Cup won by an American team. If they're the best team, then they deserve it. Also your Cup essentially does come home every year - the majority of hockey players are from Canada! It's not like the NHL just gives the Cup over to who they think should win - it is based on skill and talent, pure and simple.

I'm Canadian too... but stop whining about officiating etc. It's the same for all teams at some time or another... the team that wins the Cup deserves it regardless of where they're from. It's a long, long, long road to the Cup and whoever wins it worked their butt off for it. (Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the Cup back in Canada... Go Leafs Go)

Its all about the product on the ice. Prior to the lock out Canadian franchises ( except TOR and OTT) couldnt affort to put the talent on the ice in order to bring the cup to Canada. Sure Calgary got to the finals but their 2 goals a game could only get them so far and in the end Tampa scored more goals. Look for Canadian teams to make longer and better runs for the cup with the salary cap in place. Each team now has an equal shot at it. It just depends on the chemistry and coaching after that and how they actually use the money. Dont count Edmonton out this year. They may have lost Pronger but they picked up some solid scorers.

You make it sound like the NHL awards the Cup to whatever team they want to have it. ALL the teams have to PLAY to win the Cup. The American teams have just happened to be the ones' to win it lately but the American teams are full of Canadians. Why don't American teams deserve the Cup? Because they are American? What a load of hogwash. Whatever hockey team plays the hardest and best deserves the Cup despite WHERE their team is based. The Stars won the Cup in 1999, Derien Hatcher was the Captain, he was born in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The Cup is where it belongs--in the Hockey Hall of Fame and last time I checked, that's in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Weird wording but I drift your get...Why does the Cup "belong in Canada"? I'm Canadian and the last teams I want winning it are the Habnots (you guys have won it enough for generations) and the Make Beliefs (I want to avoid the Apocalypse, thank you).
It has nothing to do with profits, just odds. When 24 of 30 teams are American-based, odds are the majority of Cups will go that route.
Whining about officiatng is BS. Besides the Oil and Lames had teams that lucked out and ran with the hot goalie. That luck usually fairly runs out in Finals to teams that are better.
Personally, speaking as a Cdn., you cannot cheer for another Cdn team when you cheer against them all season. It's called bandwagon jumping and it just makes no sense. You should know that being a Hab fan. No self-respecting Hab fan cheers for the Laffs ever!

Are you really asking if the NHL has a bias AGAINST Canadian teams (i.e. they don't want them to win?).
If that is your answer, I would say no.
1. With the exception of Mike Modano, ALL Cup Captain's have been Canadians. And keep in mind, Modano played Junior Hockey in Western Canada.
2. It is actually mofre profitable for the NHL to have a Canadian team win the Stanley Cup. The American ratings for the last two Stanley Cup finals have scared away a lot of the huge corporations from spending their advertising dollars. Last year also marked the first time since the early 1980s that Canadian TV audiences for the Stanley Cup final were larger than their American audiences.
3. As for the Cup itself, the original cup that Lord Stanley donated sits in a vault at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.............as does the replica that is handed out.
4. Every 23-man roster currently today is 50% or more Canadian. The Canadian players don't care what city they represent when they win the cup (nor do the Americans or Europeans), they just want to drink the champagne.
5. The last two cups? I wanted Calgary to win badly............but they were outplayed. They can thank their FINNISH goalie for allowing them to get to a 7th game, it had nothing to do with poor officiating. A case of 11th overall vs 1st overall. 1st won.
Last year it was a case of 14th overall vs t-3rd overall. 3rd won.

This is WHY we Americans are getting sick of you Candians and cheer against the Candian team. You are acting so whiny about it. I could see where a Candian team was swept in the cup and lost all the games at 5-0 and the offiacting was perfect and then see fans like you complain. You would make up an excuse.
