I was speaking to this woman from work on the phone today, getting some information around a project I'm working on, and she said "Ooh I couldn't do your job, I bet it's dead tedious". Then she asked how long I'd been working for the company.
I didn't even know her, so it wasn't like a close colleague asking if you find your job boring. I just think it's really cheeky and like she's basically saying "I wouldn't have hung around doing your job for so long, haven't you got any drive ? . . ."
Thing is, I'm a business analyst and she's anoher project team member, I don't think she even knows what I do, so how come she's asking that question?
Am I right to be offended or do you think I'm reading too much into it?

i think she was syaing "how do you put up with stupid questions" from people who call you not knowing what they are doing.

wouldnt let it bother you, in my line of work, get abuse from people evryday, just dont let it get to me.

good luck and keep up the good work.

she probably wasn't insulting you. I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds more like you find your job boring if that was your automatic assumption. She likely meant that if everything you do is the same as what you were currently working on, SHE would be bored. We all have different interests or we would all be doing the same job. Just smile, and say it works for you in your current situation which is politely not answering at all and hang up.

For starters she was probably just trying to make small talk, secondly you said yourself you don't think she knows what you do, and thirdly the only person's opinion that counts on whether your job is boring or not is yours!

You have to do it five days a week - so if you enjoy it - who cares?

If you don't and her comment has made you start thinking about it and what else you can do then maybe you should be thanking her rather than being offended.

She was looking for small talk, the problem with people today (you) is that they take things offensively before they view them as just another day to day chit and chat. Maybe if you listen from a nice point of view people will seem like they're talking from a nice point of view.

If you think people are being mean, your mind will find a way, no matter what, to make them sound mean.

Of course I wouldn't be offended, do you have low self esteem or something? Why would you be offended. Plenty people do jobs others cannot stand. Who would want to be an accountant all day, looking at numbers? Not me dead boring.
So stop being sensitive and chit chat when people are chit chatting. Don't be reading stuff where nothing is written.

She's just making conversation. Maybe she's a bit silly or insensitive, and maybe you're a bit oversensitive. Forget it, and get on with your job, which you are obviously good at. Staying in post a long time is not a sign of failure, quite the opposite; useless people get moved where they will do less harm!

I dont think it sounds like she was trying to be offensive or mean to you. She was probably just trying to chat with you. There are a lot of people who have jobs that I would NEVER do and I dont think anything bad about them. To each their own. And if by some off chance she did mean it that way, forget it. What is she to you anyway? No body.

Maybe she's stupid?

That's a "yes, possibly I would" by the way.

But if you are secure in what you do then you shouldn't be concerned by the stupid comments of clueless idiots. I'm an engineer, I stopped bothering to tell people what I do, got sick of watching their eyes glaze over and drool start to leak out of their gob.

Let's see...

After I got "the call" on my cell phone, telling me to get my wife to her doctor's office RIGHT AWAY (Cancer) I don't worry about little things anymore.

I think that her comment hit a nerve -- that part you should think about.

Beyond that, unless you really love to be offended and live a horrible life, don't give it a second thought (see above for something to worry about).

She might not be very intelligent. She is certainly rather tactless. It is hardly worth getting offended....just one more slightly irritating thing happening in one's day. Don't waste the energy or emotion.

I think she was just trying to be friendly, even admiring you, for being able to cope with your job( which she thinks is boring) I would not even think about it again, I don`t think she meant any harm.
