why did the french and the dutch establish in the americas?

The French wanted Fish and Furs.
The Dutch wanted land to compete with other European countries. Problem is, because of poor management, they lost those lands (New York) to the English.

Religious freedom. Space to spread out. Europe was getting pretty crowded. To escape wars and persecution.
