I'm traveling to Mexico by car and I heard I need a permit for my car. Someone said go to either the San Francisco or Sacramento Mexican Consulate. Is there a website where I can get this info? How about a phone number?

You could obtain a permit at the Mexican Consulate or just drive down to the border and obtain it there before entering the country .Just make sure you have all the appropiate papers with you , like auto insurance, if your car is being financed a letter from the finance company allowing you to take the vehicle out of the country, and the your registration card. And ,yes there is a website MexicanConsulate.com Good Luck!!!

Are you going to visit or permanently? If you are just visiting, all you need (recommended) is insurance that you can purchase a a gazillion places along the San Diego/San Ysidro way to the Tijuana Border crossing. You'll see signs all along the roadways & you can just exit & purchase your insurance for one or more days. You'll need a valid drivers license or photo ID, OR passport, & your car registration that is current & has yearly tags. This is for a California car, so if you are from another state, it just may be different. You can call ANY insurance company & find out. AAA (Auto club of Southern California) has good info to share for free. I have driven across the border many times & had little to no problems (with & without insurance). Problem is, I haven't been in 10 years, so many things have changed. I talk to people who go there often & they say things are still the same, except that is is harder to take a rental car into Baja (Tijuana).

wow this questions reminds me of when i went to mexico a couple of years ago. I was giving this girl a ride home because she was sick. I didnt have a passport and i was financing my car thru the bank. I got stuck at the mexican consular for a whole day trying to get paperwork. I ended up having to pay 600 to get my car thru without the approval of the bank. I got 300 back when i came back. But i heard if you have a credit card which i didnt at the time that its only 10 dollars. If i were you i would call the mexican consulate (you can google it, i would but im too tired right now) and ask them.

You can get the form online. I don't know where because it's useless. You still have to wait in line and pay with everyone else when you get to the 21KM point.

Everyone going into mainland Mexican has to do this no matter how long you are there.

Here's a link from when I crossed from Nogales
