You know!!!....The veterans stand outside the grocery store and you make a donation and get a poppy pin and wear it on your lapel or hat....Or when we were kids we would take the pin out and fold them in half and use them as big red lips....Poppys!!

It is, as far as I know, pretty much Worldwide.

If I'm not mistaken it started with the poem "In Flanders Field", written by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD... Later it was "followed up" with another "reply" like poem written by American woman, Moina Michael... Some may not be familiar with it, so here it is...

We cherish too, the poppy red
Which grows on fields wherre valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
The blood of heroes never dies.

She then adopted the custom of wearing a red poppy in memory of the sacrifices of war and also as a symbol of keeping the faith.
Madam Guerin, from France, had visited the U.S. learned of the custom and took it a step further upon returning to France. She hand-crafted red poppies, selling them to raise money for the benefit of orphaned and destitute women and children in war torn areas of France.
This tradition later spread to Canada, the United States and Australia. Today, the money collected from the sale of poppies goes to fund various veterans programs.

And there you have it... It took a Canadian to think of and write about it, and American to follow through and flaunt it, a European to "synthesize" and import/export... and the rest of the world to help make it a cherished symbol on November 11th of each year.

Cheers!

I know the old vets come out and sell the fake poppies on memorial and veterans day. It doesn't seem as big here as it is in Canada and other commonwealth countries.
