Check out www.gumtree.co.uk and you should find some accommodation for whatever your budget.There's places to stay all over London and as for your monthly budget it does depend on what you want to get up to.As a rough guess £500 for the month should be enough to enjoy the capital.
Have fun.

I stayed on the place below
http://www.studioflat.co.uk/
it works at £57/night. It is in the Notting Hill area, very good transport connections, Hyde Park just a few minutes walk. If you can afford it I would recommend it.
It may look pricey, but you have a place to cook (which is much cheaper than eating out) and where to wash cheaply.
If you always eat out you should spend around £15 daily at the very least (buying sandwiches and the like), for half that you can prepare yourself 3 proper square meals if you have access to a proper kitchen (like the place above).
As for transport while in London you will need at the very minum a monthly season ticket for zones 1&2. That will cost you £85.30 (check http://www.tfl.gov.uk for up to date prices).
Not knowing the purpose of your trip I would say that if you want to be entertained on the cheap, most museums are free (that would keep you busy for at least one week) and most attractions that charge are accessible for anything between £10 and £20 ( this includes cheap seats in concerts and theathre plays as well as cinema), so a combination of free attractions and one or two charging ones during any week would be a sensible compromise (check also http://www.londonfreelist.com/home.asp )
Something you may want to explore is this:
http://www.couchsurfing.com/
you may get accomodation for free :-)
Good luck and enjoy your stay.

if you can stand all the rowdy travellers in their 20's and beleive me they will be very rowdy - bring earplugs and book a hostel they are cheapest and clean still
to go up in class - the bed and breakfasts are cheap - about 70 - 90 USD a night and you can get a big rate cut if you book a whole load of nights. Bring about 3 grand for bed and breaks - two or less will be fine for hostels

The smoothhounds website is a good one for finding accommodation but I can recommend the Royal Adelphi in Villiers St. Its basic but clean and reasonable - particularly as it is in a central location - opposite Charing Cross station.

There are various websites that can help with accomodation (cheapest at the top of the list):
http://www.flatshare.com/ and http://www.gumtree.com/ for flats;
http://www.yha.org.uk/ for hostels;
http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/ for guesthouses;
http://www.hotels.co.uk/ for hotels.
Get an Oyster card http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/ from the tube station for travel around London.
