Gardena Compton Paramount
Torrance Carson Lakewood
Lomita Long Beach

When you look at the map, the cities surrounding Carson
appear in above order within 10 miles of Carson.

Level of desirability 10 being best in terms of safety, shopping, real estate prices and quality of neighbors:

Gardena: 7
Compton: 4
Paramount: 5
Torrance: 8
Carson: 6
Lakewood: 5
Lomita: 7
North Long Beach: 5
South Long Beach 7

As for finding an affordable housing, you will probably have better luck in Gardena or Carson. Torrance is relatively a very safe place to live but the buildings are old and the rent is very high due to supposedly better public school system than the rest of other neighboring cities.

Demographically, Gardena has a lot of older people of Japanese decent, Compton has a considerable African-American population, Paramount/Lakewood has a huge number of Latinos.
Lomita and Torrance has a good mix of older yuppy-types of minorities whereas Long Beach has some Caucasion residents further down to the coast.

So Cal gangsters have chapters everywhere but Compton and Carson and Lakewood are areas where you will see police cars and ambulences flashing by with their sirens on at least every other day.

I would say, Torrance and Torrance PO areas. It's much closer to Carson. The area of Harbor City which would be between Normandie and Western from Sepulveda, quiet neighborhood there. Not too far to Carson. But the train runs on this side, so...avoid the roads with the train tracks...it's a ***** when your running late and the train decides to come inching its way down the track....LOL.

Eventually you will know the side streets to get to work and it will cut down the time even more....lol. Good luck.
