I recently met my teacher and she has 2 small very nice daughters 3 & 5. I have met them only a few times and the 3 yr old was extremely shy, why is it so, how come grown ups are not shy but young children are extremely shy meeting new people or those whom they meet infrequently?

Because small children have probably seen some adults act irrationally and they aren't sure about the ones they are meeting for the first time. Until they are sure you won't do them any harm, they tend to withdraw from strangers. Usually they hide behind mamma.

Think how you look to someone that size.
She probably thinks you look like a giant and is uncertain about you as she doesn't see you often and may not remember you it takes time for kids to get used to people.
How would you feel if someone 4 feet taller than you came around? Intimidated probably.

because you are so much bigger than they are and they feel intimidated. children are also very intuitive they can pick up when people are annoyed and have any negative feelings about their presence. oh and not all children are shy at that age.

They do not know them and kids have to adjust and feel comfortable around a new person. We also teach them not to talk to strangers!!!
