Good question. I've always wonderd that. Acorrding to this link it's an accepted name to use for any ficticious company the same as using 'John Doe' to name an unidentified body. I have seen it used in something other than the Warner Bros cartoons too but I can't for the life of me think where.

I think it could mean Accidental C***y Mechanical Equipment. Not sure. I just thought that up cos most of the acme stuff the characters use fail them.
