The only way to find out if the like goes both ways and you are compatible to be friends or more is to get to know them. Its easiest to do this by going out and getting some alone time together to talk, but you can do this at school or just hanging out at a local place like a restaurant.
Going to dinner never hurt anyone :)

Why not go out with him? What harm could it do? You may well have a really nice time...and may find you like him more than "kind of"...if your feelings don't change, then thank him for a good time, and let that be that...

You should spend some time with the person so you can get to know him better. Then if you hit it off try going out and see where it goes.

how old are you? if you are old enough go out for a coffee or pop with him and take your time getting to know him, that way you will know for sure
