Both my collegues just puchased Honda Accord. Both 98 Model, one 4 cyc and the other is V6. They purchased in the span of a months gap in between. We just figured out that I can use the key from the 4cyc Accord to open all doors including the trunk of the 6cyc accord and vice versa. The only thing that we cannot do is to start the car because it has the transponder unit attached to the key... any ideas?? I am not sure what the hell is happening here..

I think there are only so many different molds of keys made for each model car, and some keys will fit into a differents car's keyholes. but the elcetronics in the key are specifically programmed to start the car.

Until about 10 years ago this was common with all makes of cars. People specifically noticed it on GM cars in the US. Obviously there was complete uproar over it and this is now against the law in the US. If you do notice then the dealer is supposed to rekey your car for you.

Common issue with Honda. There are only a limited number of key codes and it is not unusual. They are the number one stolen car for this and other reasons.

the only thing you can do to fix this is to go to a junk yard and purchase a different lock that does not work with their current keys, get the key and install that on one of the trunks.
