My grandfather has Alzheimer's and is in a nursing home. I go to visit him on Wednesday nights and on Sundays. I bring him the pickles that he likes (he likes sour and zesty garlic) I also make sure he is stocked up with Moxie (his favorite soda) and I bring him his licorice candy. Find out what his favorite things are! For Grampy I also bought him a journal and put a big note on it so that whenever someone visits he has a note in there to remind him. This seems to have helped allot. Before he didn't remember when I came to see him or anything....now he says.. "did you remember to bring me pickles??" It may be a small thing, but it helps....Another thing Ive noticed with Grampy is that he may not remember events but the emotions from that event affect his body...for instance...my grandmother stresses him out something awful...he won't remember that she visited him, but he always has an upset stomach and a headache on the days that he has seen her...isn't that amazing? sorry it's so lengthy, hope that helps hon!
Best Wishes!

I used to work in a nursing home with the elderly. They are GREAT people. The best things to bring him would be things that would POSSIBLY remind him of the his family and past. Examples like;

Pictures
Small items
Reminding smells

Make sure they are happy memories thought that you bring.
Those people do remember some things and enjoy company and LOVE telling stories. It is great to be close to the elderly.

Check and see what his dietary restrictions are, if none, may I suggest jelly beans. The taste buds are one of the senses that last the longest.Don't give him any candy that he can get stuck in his throat. I know that magazines are a help,if not too advanced in the disease.If he is ambulatory just walking helps to calm them.You sound like a good friend, he's lucky you care.Just talk to him as if there is nothing wrong, you never know what they retain...Be Blessed for your time.....

A picture of yourself and him together. They forget sooner if they don't have things to look at and remind them. If he isn't to advanced. He may like something soft to touch like a stuffed animal. Good luck, my mother died in March form Alzheimer's.

If you can make him a video of his family and friends and all the things that he likes. It helps to keep the memories alive and it will make him feel good inside. This disease is so hurtful on so many levels because it robs people of precious memory and thought. I'm so sorry about your friend. I will keep him in my prayers.
