I need a doctor's answer or someone who has some first hand knowlege of the topic as I am doing a essay on compulsory sterilization and that is one of my thesis to prove why sterilization shouldn't be done. Sorry for anyone I might offend.

I am not a doctor, I am a special education teacher. So, my advise is not medical. Yes, they absolutely can make wonderful parents. Developmental disabilities can mean many different things. If they have mild learning disabilities, a person would generally not even know they have special needs by speaking/interacting with them. They have an abundance of support systems available for people with disabilities. SSI is a main one, and no, that does not mean our tax dollars pay for their services. They have incentives to work but at the same time keep some of their medical benefits. There are services that come in and teach the needed skills, i.e. parenting, to make the transition into parenthood as easy as possible. People with disabilities are some of the most caring individuals you will ever meet. It may take them a little longer to grasp certain concepts, however with support groups, this is possible. Check out microboards on the Internet, they are support groups of people who are centered around the individual with a disability.

I have a friend who's mildy retarded or slow. Her first born daughter was born just like her. Her second was born totally deaf. The mother and daughter can't work. The retarded daughter ofter beats up on the mother and it is a mess. The mother by the way is 56 yrs. old and the daughter is 30. I DO believe if its a mental disability they should be sterilized. By the way too, the second daughter was a result of a rape by a black man. The mother didn't know any better and was tricked by the black man to go to his place.

i am a granma of 4 , two of whom are mentally retarded. i love them dearly but would love to see them sterlized. there is no way they will ever become totally independant, they will always need some sort of help - will always be a drain on family, society. i cannot understand why they would be/should be allowed to procreate. it may be a basic human "right" but it is wrong to allow a person to bear a child just because they are physically capable . neither of these two will ever care for themselves fully and to knowingly permit them to procreate is in my opinion a worse "sin " then having them sterilized at birth or soon after. so sorry i cannot support your thesis statement.
