Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Run FireFox or Avant browser (layered on IE) and enable the popup blockers. I also run Fasterfox, Adblock plus, dutchblock, Flashblock and NoScript extensions on Firefox. That stops just about everything.

It's interesting to see people like doubleclick trying to run Java on web pages you visit, even when there's no apparent advertising. Googleanalytics is probably the biggest tracker though... if you are bothered by that.

Is it Windows Messenger you use (not to get mixed up with MSN or Live Messenger). If so, have a look at the following website and if the pop ups look that, then there's a utility in there that will stop them for you. http://www.grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

1. go to download.com and download ADware, ZoneAlarm, AVG.
2. Install, and run them.
3. It should stop the pop ups.
4. If not, then, uninstall your OS and reinstall it and do steps 1-3 again.
