Nope. I went to a party, had a party and then took my kids and their friends all over the place for candy. I really had enough. My 100+ Halloween decorations are finally put away too : )

There is sadness, but there is also a sense of completion. I gave out my treats and paraded my costume. I got to see the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade for the first time not as a participant but as an observer, with a good view from the sidewalk. Before that, I showed the movie Little Shop of Horrors (1980s musical version) to my classes.

All in all, I had a good Halloween.

"That's right -- I AM the Pumpkin King!
And I just can't wait until next Hallowe'en,
'Cause I've got some new ideas that'll really make 'em scream,
And by God, I'm really going to give it all my might!"

--Jack Skellington, "The Nightmare Before Christmas"

October is my favorite month, all orange and yellow and red-golden, from the first crisp tinges of autumn to the smoky pumpkin-and-candle scented glories of Hallowe'en at the end. October is early nights, skeletons, the echoing clatter of unseen feet running up and down a darkened street, the sheer joy of being scared and knowing it's all right, that the grinning, glowing, shape leering out of the darkness at you is nothing that can hurt you, it's just Hallowe'en.

The first weekend of October, we always take out our decorations and start putting them up. This year, the first weekend of October included the last day of September, so that Saturday my son and I unpacked the skeletons, skulls, black lights, fog machine, and other horrors, common in our mouths as household words, from the back of the garage. We spent a few happy hours each crisp golden day that weekend putting up the Forsaken Cemetary, complete with spider fences and skeletons crawling out of the ground. It was ghastly, well thought out and well executed -- in the words of Jack to the Mayor, "I believe it was our most horrible yet!" And happily, the kids in our neighborhood seemed to agree with us. EVERY CHILD who came up to our house, whether they were young enough to be accompanied by their parents or old enough to drive, told us how much they loved the decorations and wished us a Happy Hallowe'en.

And, yes, now it's over for another year. This October was the worst I've had in the last thirty, with my wife in the hospital for a week, massive work stress, unplanned travel -- and last night, even Hallowe'en left a disappointing, bitter taste after all the chocolate. My oldest friend who usually brings his daughter to our neighborhood to trick-or-treat with my kids was out of town on business, and his wife took his place. I love her like a sister, but she is a compulsive type-A who insisted that the kids weren't going fast enough, working hard enough, covering enough houses, getting enough candy -- she even complained that they weren't running across the lawn to get to the next house, that they were walking on the sidewalks and going up the driveway instead of jumping the bushes. (The third or fourth time she said so, my oldest daughter sweetly said, "That's just because we're so well-bred." I love my kids.) So this year, I'm glad October is behind us... and that makes me sad too.

And now it's time to take down the skeletons, fold up the graveyard fence, put the blacklights back in their storage boxes, pile the skulls in the back of the garage, stack the gravestones and the winding-sheets and put it all away till next year. And I'll put a close to this least-happy Hallowe'en for one more year with my favorite closing lines from my favorite play about night, magic, enchantment, love, and shape-changing:

"If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended:
That you did but slumber here
While these visions did appear,
And our weak and idle theme
No more yielding, but a dream. [...]
Give us your hands, if we be friends,
And Robin shall restore amends."

--Puck, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare
