You should fertilize basically is the Fall and Spring. Since you are so far south, you should probably overseed sometime between September 15th to October 1st to allow for good root growth before winter dormancy. As far as fertilizing, you should allow about one month after overseeding and use a good gluten based organic fertilizer maybe between October 15th and November 1st and again immediately after you mow it the first time in the Spring. I recommend using organic fertilizer that is corn gluten based as it slowly releases nitrogen and works as a premergent weed killer. You should vaoid chemical fertilizers at all cost considering you live in Florida. Chemical based fertilizers are water soluable and break down immediately upon application and thus wash into the water table. Organic gluten based fertilizers decompose slowly in you yard and promote microorganism growth and thus a much more healthy lawn ecosystem.

I live in Florida also, and work for a golf course...today we totally seeded the 200 acres with a hardy winter rye...I dont know what fertilizer they added with it, but you can get that info from a local nursery..Most grasses grow dormant starting now, so dont wait too long....hope this helped....good luck.....
