The politics is a bit complicated for a 5 year old.
Man (a bit dim) wants to get rid of the king. Buys gunpowder from the government and stores it under parliament building. The government notices. The fall guy gets executed. Anti Catholic riots and burning little men on bonfires. New king takes over. Parliament chops off his head and we get a military dictator who kills 10% of the population. Then his son takes over, but no-one takes him seriously because his name is Dick. Then we get another king and we all live happily ever after.

This took place during the reign of King Henry VIII. Before the opening of Parlament in England, the Tower's Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters to those who don't know) made an inspection of the basement of the Lords Chamber when they discovered 26 barrels of gunpowder, obviously meant to kill the king and Parlament.

Guy Fawkes, it turns out, was a member of a Catholic group hoping to kill Henry VII (who, because of a disagreement about disolving the marriage of his first wife because she didn't give him a male heir, broke with the Catholic Church and founded the Church of England) and return England to the Roman Catholic Church. Many of the conspiritors were hunted down and killed and Fawkes was executed along with others at the Tower of London. It goes without saying that life for English Catholics afterwards was very difficult.

Ever since then, before Parlament's opening, the Yeoman Warders always inspect the Lords' Chamber (mostly it's ceremonial). And around November 5 or 7, children construct effugies of Guy Fawkes to beg for money. Then at night, all the effugies are burned and the English celebrate with fireworks.

Old know it all pretty much sums it up. I guess somebody has been watching "V for Vendetta" again, eh?

Remember Remember The Fifth of November
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot
I see no reason the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot

it does no longer be that plenty different because of the fact the caatholics in that element have been at such small numbers in england that a sparkling king might of in basic terms been yet on. yet there may well be no fireworks night
