I am speaking in terms of settlement there, and not as a tourist, so it will include infrastructure facilities like shops, market's, banks, medical, post office, restaurants, good telecom facility etc etc. Also, what about the climate, roads, law & order..
Would appreciate answers from Indians and Indian's based in these 2 places.

From a tourist point of view or if you want to send your children in a hostel to study, Nainital is much better. But if you want to settle down, Dehra dun is an undoubted choice. It is a growing city with good buisness potential, good infrastructure and all the positive points associated with a big city.
Nainital on the other hand, is a small town, with a tourist driven economy, working only 4 - 5 months a year, there is no other economic activity, there is absolutely no infrastructure and very poor connectivity with the rest of the world.
Nainital is good to live in for a few weeks at the most.
And by the way, Dehra Dun is not a hill station as someone suggested here, it is a valley ! It has everything from an airport to trains to Pizza Hut to the State Assembly of Uttaranchal.
But before you get me wrong, I love Nainital, even though I stay in Dehra dun. Nainital is a beautiful place.

If you wish to have a good, healthy, long life, Nainital is unmistakably better.
Carefully observe the school children from both these places.
The Nainital kids are fresh, alert and Pinky. The Dehradun kids are dull like Delhi kids.
It is the same difference as between the waters of Ganga and Yamuna. Ganga being Nainital and Yamuna being Dehradun.

I would like to differ. Dehradun infrastructure is bursting at it seams. Very little investment in the planned development of the city.

Well I'd prefer Dehradun. Its my hometown, pretty well connected in terms of rail, road and air travel to nearby places(Delhi being one). There's nothing that you cannot find there...Its the capital now comes under the Uttranchal state. Equipped with malls, best places to eat, to live, property, banks, hospitals etc.
Hope this is useful!

this is a good question being born and brought up in a foreign country i have always been forced to look at india from the outside, i must say i am preety satisfied with the way things are going for india, and therefore i too am nervous especially when it comes to settling down in india, as india has it own lifestyle that is intensely different from most developed nations... so my advice would be to actually question yourself and see if you are willing to adapt to a whole new way of life ... as i have already moved to a foreign country thus i know that assimilation is not easy.
