They probably wore horns on their helmets for ceremonial rites. Consider the fact that horns would provide excellent places for axes or swords to lodge. You wanted smooth and you wanted hard but you didn't want protrusions on your skull-protector.

They actually did not "wear" horns, they grew out of their heads like a cow's horns do.
