easy, just look at the underside, if the shell is concave,ie. goes inward, it is male, if quite flat, it is female, easier for mating!

While this is really hard to do on a young tortoise, once it nears sexual maturity you can look for a couple key details:
Plastron Shape: The plastron (belly shell) is flat or out-curved on females, and incurved on males.
Tail: Male tails are longer and thinner, with the cloaca (vent) nearer the tip. Female's are short and wide with the cloaca near the base.
In most species, the male is smaller and more colorful- but that is not real useful unless you know the tortoise's age.
Other species of turtles use other techniques- foreclaws in male sliders, eye color in some box turtles, etc.

first of all that's quite complicated to intercourse a Herman's in the event that they are under 5-7 years previous. men regularly have a much wider tail base and an prolonged tail, which will reason it to tuck under greater, yet a curled under tail isn't a different sign. women have a greater slender tail base and a lots shorter tail, it regularly is able to be held to the side by using this. the two way, there are exceptions to all of that and the proper element to do is take it to the vet, and have a blood attempt achieved. maximum vets do it for birds and it is an identical technique.

Basically male tortoises have longer tails and the femalis have shorter more thinner tails. But remember you cannot know the sex of the tort until he/she is 5 years old, this is whn they reach maturity. Alternativly you could have it x-rayed but thats like frying the poor baby-so nt recomended !

1) Lay out two tortoise-porn magasines in front of it, one for gay tortoises, and one for straight tortoises.
2) Leave the room
3) Come back in 2 days and see which magasine has a wet-patch

It's very hard, even vets get it wrong, next time you take him to a vet ask, but I think there is a difference in the tail size.

Pick up the turtle, gently shake it. If it rattles, it's a boy!
