I have an orange tree in the backyard. Last year it gave us nice oranges, this year it has a bunch of small oranges that are all split open. I don't have anything close to a green thumb - more of a "thumb of death" when it comes to plants. Any tips for helping out my poor orange tree?

It's most likely environmental and nothing you did. Sometimes as the fruit is maturing if there is a dry spell the fruit skin starts to harden and the growth slows or stops depending on severity of conditions. Later if rains return the plant takes up a lot of that water and when it reaches the fruit the fruit tries to get larger but can't until the skin splits.

Next year if you get a dry spell in late spring or early summer make sure you water the trees and many times this problem can be avoided.
