Try lifting the mattress while you are tucking in the sheet. I also step on the dust ruffle, he, he, he.

After you have put the fitted sheet onto the mattress, lay the flat sheet on top pattern side down. The top edge of the flat sheet should be flush with the top of the mattress. Make sure the flat sheet is wrinkle free. The amount of overhang on either side of the bed should be equal left and right, and there should be extra overhang at the foot of the bed and no overhang at the head of the bed. Start on the left side foot of the bed. Lift the top mattress up at the corner with your left hand and with your right hand (in a sweeping motion)tuck the overhang from the foot of the bed under the mattress. Now you should have the left side foot of the bed overhang tucked up neatly and the left side should still have overhang. Square up the overhang so its tidy. Now lift the mattress again this time with your right hand and tuck the remaining overhang (from the left side of the bed) under the mattress with your left hand. You should now have a fitted corner and and your dust ruffle should be hanging cleanly. Tug the bottom left corner of the ruffle to insure it is not bunched up. Repeat this process for the right corner. Now place your comforter over the cleanly tucked fitted sheet. Lastly fold the top of the bedding over it's self to reveal the flat sheets embellishments. Add pillows and you're all done.

I use to have that problem too until I found a Comfortspread! It is a bedspread with the ruffle already on it! So when I make my bed, the ruffle is hanging nice and neat! I love it! The one I have now is a Quilted spread with a ruffle, it is so pretty. Most stores have them. Such as J.C. Penneys, Sears, etc...

In addition to lifting the mattress, try pinning your dust ruffle down with some safety pins to keep it in place.

Use two hands and your shoulder. You lift the mattress, hold it with your shoulder and tuck the sheet in.
I feel your pain. Have been looking for a lovely bedspread myself so I can avoid this.

My feet are always cold. So I guess I need them tucked in. But not on the sides of the bed.
