I am looking to buy a car and found a 1991 BMW 750 IL for 1500$
It has 133k miles and fully loaded. There are a few problems with it however. The AC is out because it leaked freon (sp?), and it leaks oil out of the valve covers. How big of a problem is the oil leak to the over all condition of the car and about how much would it cost to fix on average? The same with the AC? With these problems and a few cosmetic blemishes (Head liner drooping in a few places, small dent in drivers door, paint not perfect) how good is this deal? Thanks for your informed answers.

step back and reconsider, this is a very sophisticated car, just about all work is for pro mechanics only and parts are outrageously expensive

Are you doing the work or are you having it fixed.

Depending on how easy it is to get to the valve covers that should not be that hard or expensive. Unless it's not the only oil leak.

The AC could be a problem because when fixing it you might have to covert to a new type of freon for environmental reasons. That will mean new compressor and probably new coils. Not cheep.

Other blemishes will nickle and dime you to death.

If you like working on cars it might not be bad but if you plan on having someone do the work for you it will get costly. Consider looking for a less sporty car that will give you more reliablility for the money but at 1500.00 just about anything is going to need work.

A few problems???? You're quite optimistic.

Your biggest problem is that BMWs are not cheap to repair. It's hard to say what a repair will cost without a close exaination. I would guesstimate the a/c will cost about $300-$500 and anywhere from $300 to $1500 for the oil leak which may be a symptom of a much larger problem.

My advice... take it to a mechanic and have them do a through inspection. It's worth the $100 to find out what you're getting yourself into. that $100 may save you thousands of dollars not to mention a HUGE headache in the long run.

Buy it! Or someone else will. Anything that has to do with freon or oil leaks can be fixed without much hassle or money. Oh and if the freon leak is in a compromising place just ride with your windows down until you can get it fixed. For your headliner I recommend thunbtacks.

I'd suggest buying a shovel, digging a hole in the ground and pouring money into it. You'll get the same results with a lot less hassle. If a BMW that old with problems was free it wouldn't be a good deal.

you need to find a different vehicle to buy. for one when a BMW starts leaking oil it will also start to run bad. BMW engine vacuum system is so picky that just removing the oil dipstick will cause the car to stumble and idle poorly. so look for another car and that price is is not what you want to pay for a problem car
