As you might have guessed, many people have debated this over time. Being that I am a combination Atheist and Agnostic I will tell you two things that I believe will happen. Number one: In about ten billion years or so, our yellow star will accelarate its consumption of its' fuel and start to expand, consuming Mercury, Mars, and Venus. Earth will get spared the devouring by the sun and will just have its' oceans, atmosphere and most if not all living things vaporized by the intense heat and radiation. The end of the world. Number two: I will be proved wrong by the Rapture (for those of you who don't know what it is, it is supposed to be when the faithfull will disappear, taken by their god) and our old, decrepid world will cease to exist, replaced by a new one created by this Jesus character. Now I'm not trying to burst any bubbles or get into any religious argument here, but that's my belief and I'm sticking to it.

About five billion years from now when the sun will expand and engulf the Earth.

Of course, there's lots of time between now and then, and a lot could happen. Sometime within the next 200 million years, Earth will be hit by a meteor at least as big as the one that exterminated the dinosaurs. Half the species then extant will become extinct.

The most explainable way is a meteor in the year 2010 when a meteor makes a pass very close to the earth. But other wise being a catholic i believe when the bible is fulfilled or more scientifically when the sun finishes its life span

The sun will expand into it's Red Giant phase once the main sequence ends and will likely engulf the Earth. If it doesn't, it will certainly sterilize it and boil away any atmosphere it had left.
