to elect a female president, and in the US, that is unheard of?

That's because the two main political parties in the USA
have never had a woman win their party's nomination for
the Presidency of the USA. The closest any woman has
come is Geraldine Ferraro, who won the 1984 Democratic
nomination for Vice-President. She and Walter Mondale,
who was the party nomination for President, lost badly
to the Republican nominated Ronald Reagan and George
Bush for President and Vice-President respectively.
Khaleda Zia, was the first woman to be elected prime
minister in Bangladesh. She is the wife of an assasinated
leader, Ziaur Rahman, and leads his former party, the
Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Bangladesh has never
elected a female President. They have elected a female
prime minister though. Indira Gandhi was elected by
the people of India, not Bangladesh to the person who
made comments about her. Bangladesh, was formerly
known as East Pakistan, until about 1971, and it broke
off from India around 1947.

The daughter of the assassinated leader Gandhi was inevitable, that was her end as well. It only became the Muslim country after the revolution (civil war), when Gandhi freed them from Great Britain, India is a Hindu culture for the most part from their beginning of their empire, but fell to England and now it is very diversified in cultural sects amongst Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, and believe it or not many Christians live amongst them.
The political realm has been relatively progressive in medicine because the country is ridden with disease and women are very good at nursing and doctoring but politically they are not accepted amongst the strict clans of the orthodox religious leaders. This brings about the turmoil when it comes to women anywhere.

In the US it is almost impossible to become president as it is... you need thousands of financial supporters and cronies to further you along. Every four years it is a big deal for each party to get someone into office so they don't want to take the risk of losing if they pick a candidate they don't think will win.

Blame the parties, not the people.

Bangladesh is probably a parliamentary system and would therefore have better chances of a woman sneaking into office.
