bill russell was a winner in grade school, high school, college and the nba....maybe its because he belongs to the era long time past but these people who think of others as the greatest never bother to look up russell's winning accomplishments.... and to those of you who chose chamberlain, you might want to check how russell dominated their encounters to wilt's frustration and you have the gall to choose wilt over rusell...and remember michael jordan did not win his first title until he was six years in the league and bird, magic and kareem were fading or away from the battles....11 rings in 13 nba campaigns says it all and he even played in 12 finals....no player ever has ever achieved 12 finals in 13 seasons and to say no one will ever again is a safe bet....being great should never be about personal records, flashy plays, or scoring many points...it should be about winning and there is no bigger winner than the great Bill Russell

This will be a huge debate. The 3 players that should always be brought up are Bird, Russell, and Jordan. Personally I wouldn't go with Jordan just because how much he changed the game to being above the rim. Basketball had a much larger fan base in the 60's, 70's, and the 80's before Jordan changed the game. Between Bird and Russell I could never choose. I always thought Bird was a much more clutch player. Keep in mind though Magic Johnson did it all also.

Bill Russell never made Lew Alcindor look silly...they never played against each other.

People say Jordan because he won 6 rings, but Russell won 11 in his 13 year career...Jordan's not even close.

Chamberlain owns the record books.

Jabbar is the leagues all time scoring leader, 3rd leading rebounder, and won the same number of titles as Jordan (six).

All 3 were better than Jordan, as were Magic, Bird and Oscar Robertson..

Jordan probably ranks just behind these guys.

Any player in the history of the NBA would rather have one of these other guys as his teammate than Jordan, and that includes Scottie Pippen.

The NBA has featured many famous players, including George Mikan, the first dominating "big man"; ball-handling wizard Bob Cousy and defensive genius Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics; Wilt Chamberlain, who originally played for the barnstorming Harlem Globetrotters; all-around stars Oscar Robertson and Jerry West; more recent big men Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone; playmaker John Stockton; Julius Erving, pioneer of the slam dunk; and the three players who many credit with ushering the professional game to its highest level of popularity: Larry Bird, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, and Michael Jordan.

Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Michael Jordan.

basketball player...Bill Russell objectively with 13 championships in 15 years. 11 in the NBA and 2 with USF. Subjectively, Jordan cause he was acrobatic and won 6 NBA titles and 1 with UNC.

Who did Jordan have to go head to head with? Gerald Wilkens? Otis Birdsong?

Who did Bill Russell at 6'9" have to go head to head with? 7'11/4" Wilt "the big dipper" Chamberlain.

I love MJ but nod goes to Russell.
