They aren't. If they are to you or anyone else, they are shallow and weak.
When I see someone decked out and looking totally hot, my first thought is, who has the time and money to look like that? And then I realize that people overcharge their credit cards, ignore time with those they love the most to look a certain way, and spend time obsessing with their appearance when they could be making some positive changes in the world around them that help people other than themselves. Then, when they are older and deep in debt, they will have nothing to show for it.
Just my opinion, but there are plenty of superficial and materialistic people that will disagree with me.

With regard to mating: The physical traits that make a person attractive are generally an indicator of fertility & health.
For example, a man with a strong jaw line is thought to be more dominate, fertile, & capable of taking care of his family (as opposed to a man with a weak chin).
Same goes for weight.
The first responder was partially correct by stating that it is a "first impression".
Most of our judgement is based upon past experiences. You may be judging a person b/c you've had a good/bad experience with a person of similar size, weight, complexion, et cetera.
As they say, your ideal mate will have all the characteristics of those who have had an impact on your life (such as your mother, father, siblings, ex's - et cetera).

looks are the intial attractor in a relationship, good looks in a girl is the same as the color in a make ducks head or the size of a male peacocks tail. (I wonder why aren't men the beautiful ones?) you must first have your eye caught, then the rest of the stuff (personality, compatiblity etc.) comes into play...

Because they're your first impression. People can't see what a wonderful, caring, generous person you might be on the inside from a distance of 40 feet.

Because it's the first impression we see, even though it is a shallow attitude to take, i do believe that beauty comes in many forms...it's just depends on the beholder, and what they determine as being attractive, after all beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

It's the first thing you see. It's a quick impression. It's just human nature. We like shiny thing, things that are pretty. But they aren't everything. Ugly people are loved people just have to get to know them. And you move past looks and the person become beautiful. You will never hear a mom say "God, my baby is ugly!' because really there is beauty in every one.

It's what gives attraction. Other things eventually play into the role but it's really the foundation of attraction.
