The gallbladder (or cholecyst sometimes gall bladder) is a pear-shaped organ that stores about 50 mL of bile (or "gall") until the body needs it for digestion. The gallbladder is about 7-10cm long in humans and is dark green in appearance due to its contents (bile), not its tissue. It is connected to the liver and the duodenum by the biliary tract.

The gallbladder holds bile. Bile is produced by the liver to help digest fats. The gall bladder squirts bile into the small intestine to digest the fats there.

The gall bladder secretes BILE, which is produced in the liver.
Bile emulsifies(breaks down) fats. Breaks fats down into smaller fat droplets.
Bile acts as an antiseptic, prevents the decomposition of chyme (food) in the small intestine.
Bile reduces the fluidity of the chyme.
Bile is alkaline in nature, neutralises the acidic chyme as it flows from the stomach.
Bile is stored temporarily in the gall bladder until chyme(food ) enters the duodenum of the small intestine.

gall bladder plays a role purely as a storage organ to store the bile juice produced by the liver..bile juice contains 2 pigments biliverdin and bilirubin and also a couple of salts sodium glycocholate and sodium taurocholate.
there have been cases where humans have continued life even after removal of gall bladder... so its role is not of great significance
