Bleach probably won't ruin any parts, but it won't touch your rust. It will kill mold. To remove rust stains try something called CLR (removes calcium, lime and rust, thus the name.)

Yes it will. It will dry and crack the flapper. I was using those cakes you drop in the tank that have bleach in them and replacing the flappers every 3-4 months. Since I switched to the non-bleach variety, I have not changed a flapper in 3 years. Anyway, bleach does not work on rust, look for Rust-Away or other cleaning agent made specifically for rust.

Bleach won't hurt your toilet, just use it in moderation.
I do have the perfect thing for you to use on the rust in your
toilet. Go to Lowes and look in the cleaning isle, they have
this stone, it's like a pumic stone that removes rust from
toilets. I have thrown away the package that it came in, so i
can't remember exactly what its called. If you can't find it just
ask a salesperson to help you find it. Tell them its a pumic stone
used for cleaning rust.
You will be so amazed, my husband and i had tried everything, and i saw this and thought what the heck. Got home and read
the directions, you just get it wet in the toilet and rub it on the
stain and it will remove it without hardley any scrubbing. It didn't
scratch the enamel either. The cost is under $5.00
I just can't say enough good things about this, Hope you try this.

Use Limeaway or CLR to get rid of rust. Bleach won't hurt anything, but your rust will not go away with bleach.

Bleach won't hurt the parts, but it won't get rid of the rust either. There are special products made for getting rid of rust; see your local hardware store.

Repaeted use of bleach will cause the little flapper inside your toilet tank to dry out. Try CLR. Home Depot is a good place to ask what you should use.
