The warm air pushes over the denser cold air and itself cools - hence the snow. As the cold air gets replaced by the warmer air, we experience the rain.

The air of a warm front moves faster at higher levels. Thus precipitation has to pass the underlying cold air and freezes. The longer the passage is the longer time the frozen ice crystals have to form snow flakes. While the warm front passes the cold air at the bottom gets pushed away by and by, and the height of the cold air diminishes. Have a look at the picture in

Freezing rain: the earth's surface is still cold and rain freezes when reaching it. But since the warm front leads to higher temperatures some time later frozen precipitation usually melts again soon.
