Petrol is one of the products produced from crude oil.
A process called fractional distilation is used to separate out all the useful elements of crude oil. Fractional distilation is a process where by oil is heated to progressively higher temparatures. At set temperatures a different product is separated depending on the point it turns into a gas. The gas is then fed into a cooling chamber where, as it cools, it turns back into a liquid.
As well as petrol some of the other things to come out of crude oil (distilates) are used to produce many industrial and household solvents and cleaners as well as plastics and other fuels.
Petrol is further processed to clean it and grade it for different engines. In the past and still in some countries lead was added as a lubricant for the engine. Benzine is also added to improve its octane levels (This will make it more efficient).
So what is crude oil made of I hear you ask! Well crude oil is a fossil fuel. It is what is left of vaste prehistoric forests and vegitation that have been trapped in rocks for millions of years and subjected to extreamly high pressures. A similar process also produces coal.
Incidentally coal can also be used to make petrol! - but thats another answer...

Over thousands of years, hundreds of millions of dead plankton and other sea creatures floated down to the sea bed and where covered by sediment, which in time through pressure of other sediment solidified into sedimentary rock. These rocks were covered by a cap rock, then tipped through earth movement and the plankton, which had now turned into crude oil rose to the top of the sedimentary rock where it was trapped in pools by the impermeable cap rock (rock which water cannot pass through).
The crude oil is formed into three layers - natural gas, brine (salt water) and oil. When the site is drilled firstly the gas escapes, is burnt off or bottled, then the brine is drained and lastly the oil, which is under intense pressure, is forced to the surface.
The crude oil is then heated to varying temperatures and one of the by products is petrol. - This is why it is called fossel fuel.

Gasoline, also called petrol, is a petroleum-derived liquid mixture consisting primarily of hydrocarbons and enhanced with benzenes to increase octane ratings, used as fuel in internal combustion engines.
Most Commonwealth countries, with the exception of Canada, use the term "petrol" (abbreviated from petroleum spirit). The term "gasoline" is commonly used in North America where it is commonly shortened in colloquial usage to "gas." This should be distinguished in usage from genuinely gaseous fuels used in internal combustion engines such as liquified petroleum gas. The term mogas, short for motor gasoline distinguished automobile fuel from aviation gasoline, or avgas. The word "gasoline" can also be used in British English to refer to a different petroleum derivative historically used in lamps; however, this use is now uncommon. Most American Spanish dialects use the word gasolina, derived from the North American usage.
