Because people are uninformed and uneducated. Our society is the only one that still looks down on breastfeeding in public. For years many women didn't breastfeed, it is just now becoming more common again. I think with all the new laws and time, this will change.
As for c0mplicated_s0ul, no one wants your child to see someone having sex or using the bathroom in public. But how dare you compare feeding a child with either of those. What did you do when your children were little and hungry? Did you never leave the house? Did you hide in a bathroom? Let me guess, you used formula! So you made your choice and I made mine.
I have chosen to give my son the best possible start in life by breastfeeding for at least one year. If you want to have your lunch in the restroom stall, then I will glady join you there when my baby is hungry. Then your children will never see a very normal and natual thing.
I think the more women begin to nurse in public the more normal it would be. It will become natural to walk into a mall, a bank, an office, anywhere and see a mother feeding her child.
I applaud all women who are breastfeeding and refuse to go and hide to do so. Keep it up, things will change!

Even when at the Mall you can go into a stall in the bathroom or just go somewhere out of the main public areas. How long are you gonna breastfeed anyway, maybe a year of that little one's life, so it's not going to be an issue for long. But,see, if your baby gets to squirming, he/she could detach from nursing and leave your nipple staring at the guy across from you, so it's reallly about the mother's discretion too that you should pick a private area. A blanket can be hard to keep over you, if your child is squirmy, and you have to find some way to peek under there without revealing anything, plus the child can get too hot. If you could and would afford those expensive maternity clothes specially made for nursing with little hidden flaps it might work, but I personally would be more comfortable where I could relax and do it.

Well...I've breastfed two of my children and to be fair. No one wants to see your breast all out in public like that. I don't, have some class. Some women don't care who's around, where they are, they just pull them out without any attempt to discreetly breastfeed.
You are definitely right, it's wonderful and there are so many benefits to breastfeeding. BUT let's be considerate of others while in public. I'm for breastfeeding don't get me wrong. There's just a way to do it with tact, that's all.

Because breasts are seen as sexual, people are embarrassed by it. It is natural and wonderful, but people are taught at a very young age that breasts are to be covered not shown. I breastfed my daughter in public and I'll do the same with my next child and if people don't like it, they don't have to look.

It is a very natural act, but I think some people get offended because they don't know you, and it is quite personal to see someone breast-feed. I think if women want to breast-feed in public, just carry a blanket and cover it up so you don't expose yourself to the world.
I'm not sure that I'd be comfortable enough to feed in public, but then again, I don't have a little one of my own yet. Once I do, and they're screaming for food, I probably won't care and just feed them wherever I am.

I am not a prude and I think it is natural BUT for me it is the WHOAH! factor. If I walk down a beach I know there is a possibility of seeing a breast. I am not looking for it, I am just aware of the possibility. As I am walking into a foyer of a business, I do not see that as a possible place and ... WHOAH!
My immediate reaction is to look away, then I feel like I am rude(prude) and I look back...then I am staring...CRAP!!
I think it is fine, I just need warning. I like giraffes. I don't expect to see one in my backyard, but if I do, its okay. I will still say WHOAH!...

Because they think that "it is just indecent human behavior to just pop your breast out and feed your baby like you are an animal." and there are some people that have ugly looking breast. Some women are jealous because we offend them when their husband tries to get a look at your breast while you are feed are little baby or babies. I say **** them I will feed my baby weather you like it or not. Breast feeding is a beautiful thing why hide it. I know I don't.

Because some people forget that the whole reason women have breasts is so the woman can feed her infants. They think that boobs only serve sexual purposes. I breastfeed when and where my baby wants it. Everyone who thinks thats wrong can suck my big toe.
