This may be a stupid question... but can a transabdominal ultrasound be perfomed when a woman is on her period? what about a transvaginal one?

Sorry about the stupid question.

Both studies can be done when a woman is on her period. A transvaginal ultrasound might be embarrasing/messy for the patient, so if you are worried about that, then schedule at a different point of your cycle. We do transvag u/s on women who are bleeding and at risk for miscarriage routinely.

this website has a ton of info on ultrasounds that seems reliable to me. http://www.webmd.com/hw/healthy_women/hw5395.asp

It does not specifically mention being on your period so I don't know. I suppose it depends on what your doctor is looking for. I don't think that your period would prevent the ultrasound from taking place but it is possible it might make it more difficult for the doctor to interpret the results. If you are going to have one, ask your doctor what he or she prefers.
