I took Castor Oil with my last pregnancy. I was two weeks over-due, so my doctor was going to induce me. Well, I had my second pregnancy induced ... and found the contractions soooo much more intense. I didn't want to go through that again, if I could help it.

Castor Oil can be purchased OTC in bottles of 250 and 500ml. I purchased the 250ml ... then thought I had better ask the pharmacist if it was as safe as most say it is. She asked if I was over-due, which I assured her I was, then she proceeded to tell me that Castor Oil was the way of inducing a baby, when Oxy was not yet available.

The pharmacist told me the usual dosage is 500ml, but I could try the 250ml that I had already purchased ... that, or buy another 250ml bottle. When I inquired as to whether or not the Castor Oil could, in any way, harm the baby .... she assured me that, NO, it would not. If the baby is ready ... labor will begin, if not ... nothing will happen, aside from the usual diarrhea.

I mixed the 250ml bottle of Castor Oil with orange juice and drank the mixture at approx. 6:00 pm. Within an hour, the diarrhea started ... then at approx 10:00pm mild contractions started. I stayed up all night ... not because the contractions hurt (they were about the same as Braxton Hicks ... in intensity), but because I was excited.

At 6:00am I woke my husband and we went to the hospital. I was already dialated 4cm. The doc broke my water at 10:00am and my son was born at 11:07am. I was soooo relieved ... I only had to endure a little over one hour of extememly intense contractions ... a bit different from my previous delivery, where I was induced ... and went through 6 hours of HARD labour.

Please ... make sure you are over-due hun ... otherwise let baby come when it's ready. Take care ... wishin' you and your little one the best ....... congrats!!

Castor oil does work for some women, but it isn't a pleasant experience. It will cause extreme bowel discomfort and diarrhea and it can bring on hard labor very quickly. I would not recommend trying it without talking to your Dr. It works best in it's oil form and it can be bought at most drug stores. If you decide to try this, please make sure that you are close to the hospital or your baby might be born on the way there! Or it might just make you violently ill and not bring on your labor at all. The only certain thing is that it WILL make you sick.

This is true. I have a 5 yr old son, and the closer I got to his due date, the more I just wanted to have him!. I talked to my doctor who of course mentioned eating spicy food or 'doing the do', but neither had worked thus far. When I wouldn't stop whining, she 'casually' mentioned Castor oil. Seeing the maniacal look that jumped into my eye must have un-nerved her a bit, because she immediately attempted to back pedal. ("Oh, but you know, natural induction is best"... "just let your body go when it's ready..") Yeah, right. I'd heard all I needed to.

Well, ON his due date, I waddled into a Brooks Pharmacy, and demanded a bottle of Castor oil. The guy behind the counter gave me a strange look, but handed it over anyway. That night, I got a bottle of orange soda, poured about half the bottle of Castor oil in a glass, and filled the rest with the soda. I held my nose (I was scared I'd throw up... my goodness, was it nasty) and downed it. I called my friend Melissa, told her what I'd done, and laughingly told her that if she didn't hear from me the next morning, it was because I was in the hospital giving birth.

At approximately 1:20AM, I felt like I had to poop. I headed to the bathroom and sat on the seat for what felt like hours. I felt like I had so much to get out, but little or nothing would come. (I apologize for the graphic nature of this tale...lol). Anyway, I gave up, waddled back to bed, and lay down. Well, what would you know? I started cramping/contracting about 5 minutes later.... So that was about that. Jacob emerged about 5 hrs later weighing in at 8lb 07oz. And that was that. So yes, it did work for me...

If you utilize castor oil DO NOT drink it. First off it tastes nasty, secondly it explanations diarrhea and you don't desire that at the same time you're in exertions. If you're going to make use of it rub it in your stomach and canopy the field w/ saran wrap and position a heating pad or wet wash garments over it. It nonetheless is helping to urge exertions w/ out the unhealthy facet results. I will alert you it's messy although! Also, rubbing your nipples for expanded durations of time, intercourse and going for walks support to urge contractions additionally.

DO NOT DO THIS!!!

Castor oil does help to induce labor. HOWEVER, it may also loosen the baby's bowels and cause him/her to release, and then eat, his/her own poop (called meconium). This is very dangerous for baby and should absolutely not be done.

There are much better ways to induce labor, including nipple play, sex, and causing the mother to orgasm. If you want to be chemically induced, go to a hospital and get a pitocin drip. (I don't recommend induction in general. It's usually better to let your body decide that your baby's lungs are ready to function in the outside world.) But if you must induce, do something else, not castor oil. It's potentially very harmful to you and your baby, and who wants diarrhea while they're in labor anyway?

Congratulations on your impending bundle of joy, and I hope s/he comes soon for you!

Ugh, castor oil will give you the sh!ts (and maybe make baby poop too, not good) this can sometimes lead to larbour but don't do it!

Try having sex to jump start labour :) I know you are probably anxious to get the pragnancy over with and meet your little one but just take the last few days/weeks to relax and prepare, don't rush it :)

YES! I did try it and it DID work! I bought it at a local drug store, and I only saw it in liquid form. It was GROSSSS, but I gulped it down. It feels and tastes like you are drinking baby oil.

I SWEAR, later that day I went into labor, and my baby was born that night.

When I originally took it I did so thinking that it was just some old wives tale. However, for me it really worked!!!

castor oil can help but it is not a good idea for everyone, it makes some woman so violently ill that they end up vomitting everywhere. Also it could induce dihorhea in both you and the baby, so your baby could defecate in your womb.

It does not itself induce labor. What happens is it will give you extremely bad diarhea which when your bowels start contracting may in turn set off uterine contractions but only if it is your time to deliver. Don't do this. It is not safe for you or your baby.
