It seems that many states require you to relinquish your prior state's drivers license when you move. Is there any federal law on this issue? I have found information on the web about states linking their CDL licenses data but not regular drivers licenses.

No federal law but every state has a law that says a driver's license is issued only where the individuals primary resident is. It's the same with voting. It's illegal to vote in a state where you don't reside.

Back before truckers were required to have a cdl many of them held licenses from different states in order to hide tickets. Ever since the cdl law came into effect it's been illegal to have a license from more than one state. You must give up one to aquire the other.

Generally it is because it also establishes your state of residence as well as your I.D. There are exceptions though; for instance, at one time I had a regular license from the state that I was a legal resident of, but also had a license (restricted to motorcycle only) from another state that I was living in temporarily.

You always have to relinquish your old license anytime you are getting a new one - even if you are staying in the same state.

When I turned 21 they wanted my under 21 license back.

When I got my motorcycle endorsement, they printed a new license and took my old one.

There can be trouble with extra licenses floating around - identity theft, use as fake IDs by siblings, using it if your license gets revoked, etc.

I just had my CDL renewed a few months back. I had to take the stupid hazmat test again. She gave me a paper temporary license and I went to give her my old license and she said to keep it. That was in MA. Even though it was about to expire I would think they would want it back but she didn't.

well when you get a license for a different state you are supposed to give it to them so they can keep it then you have to get a new one if you move from state to state

I'm from Canada and generally you only need one licence because any province you go to they will issue you their licence to you and any classes or grades you have received transfer over plus hey who wants to pay to renew more then one licence.
