Before you do any investing in stocks, learn about them first. Take a look at the following web sites which will get you started in the right direction:

http://www.pencils2.com/
http://www.fool.com/

Take your time, learn, and get comfortable with stocks. Warren Buffett sums it up it a good way: If you can't keep your money in stocks for 10 years, you shouldn't think about investing for 10 minutes.

Good luck!

With a small amount like that, I'm guessing you are not going to be active traders? For reasonably priced online trading with no monthly fees you can try Scottrade.com.
You can also check out www.izone.com which is owned by TD Ameritrade but if you want level II you have to pay a monthly fee for that but each trade is only $5 I believe

you need to do a discount broker compairison. look at minimum balance requirements, & inactivity fees. in your case they could do alot more damage than getting the best deal on the actual trade. check out ScotTrade.com, I think that one might suit your needs as well as any.
