The main thing - more important than rhyme, is scansion. Scansion is the rhythm of the syllables. If scansion is wrong it throws the whole poem out of kilter, and it is quite difficult to get it right.

Screw it. Poetry is extremely important, and it probably helps him deal with his emotions. Writing poetry helps you grow more than you will ever do when chained to a desk and writing a report on what year the king's dog disrespectfully pissed on the border of the neighboring country and sparked a war between yadda yadda...blah...blah. You should be encouraging his interest and listening when he talks about poetry. I {suppose} if his grade is dropping, you should encourage him to focus more and pull it back up again. But for goodness' sake - don't make him stop writing poetry! At least he isn't melting his brain by watching truckloads of TV like most other kids his age do. - -

Spell Check! Also, if they have a character number restriction or number of lines, don't guess. Use your Tools to help with all this.
I've been published thru Poetry.com (which, really accepts anyone I think, so I'm not bragging, just noting experience) and following their guidelines made it easy.
Pay attention to fees, if any. Basically, read their guidelines and follow it to the letter. Too many people are doing their best to win and one slip-up will bump you out of the running.
