Because at this point, he's more likely to hurt a candidate than help them with an appearance as many democrats have taken the choice of distancing themselves from Kerry rather than risk the issue hurting them in the polls.

In football, this is the equivalent of taking a kneel-down in the final 2 minutes of the game when you have the lead.

I don't think he canceled them all. He was asked not to come to Iowa. In close races he'd be a hindrance not a help.
