Ok, im from the UK and fly to the US occasionally. They do the thing with your finger prints and take your photo when I enter. Now when I'm leaving the US I see them kiosk's at Chicago O'Hare airport and think "If I don't do this they might not let me back in the county". My question is, do i have to "check out" and if its voluntary then can it still affect re-entry?

US immigration is very wary of people entering the country and not leaving when they said they were going to do it. Register your exit every time. You may have problems otherwise.

Unless you have a green card.

Basically they want to be sure you left.

In any case, why would you not do this? BCIS, TSA and DHS are a bunch of jobsworths, but there's no point antagonising them. Why not check out?
