I recently went to melboourne and stayed at the clock tower apartment on lygon st in carlton, Great place to stay with a kitchen and a laundry and loungeroom too around $280 per night.. and very good location, walk out to the many restaurants on lygon, about a ten minute stroll into the city also, a taxi to the crown from the apartments was $12.. if you want somewhere alot cheaper say around the $30-60 a night, Toad hall on elizabeth st just down from the markets is pretty good for a backpackers, you can get a private room, and the common room in the basement has foxtel.. also they have kitchen amenities also, and your room comes with a bar fridge and sink...

I just got back from Melbourne, I stayed with friends so don't know about accommodation. However when visiting you still have to check out the Crown Casino, Great ocean Rd, Bells Beach (where they filmed point break) and stroll along the Yarra river. Plenty to do, it's a beautiful city. If you don't mind travelling, you should check out Sovereign Hill in Ballarat, it's like an old gold mining town, pretty cool. Also The Sanctuary in Healsville, if you want to get to know some of the native animals, an they do a really cool birds of prey display.

Hilton, Hyatt (both inner city - wont be cheap but not as pricey as Crown)
Anywhere on the Mornington Peninsula is also nice (beach views ect)
The Dandenongs (NOT Dandenong) is also great, mountains and bush secenery.
