i recently had a pap, and it came back abnormal. I had a yeast infection (or what i thought to be) a week before my appointment, could that have made my results abnormal? or what are other possibilities..

There are many reasons to have an abnormal pap. An infection is just one reason. It could actually be abnormal cells on your cervix, without it being cancer as well.

Your doctor should watch it and repeat the pap again in three months or sooner if there is a history of abnormality. They should use a thin prep pap this time as well, because they are more sensitive.

If the pap comes back abnormal again, then you will probably need a colposcopy. It is just a fancy name for a detailed examination of your cervix, and a possible biopsy of abnormal cells.

I have had both and had a negative biopsy and clean paps ever since. Going for my one year this week!

Good luck to you.

a yeast infection can cause an abnormal pap, but you could also have displaysia, which is very commom for women. Could be HPV. your doctor will probably order another pap because your body will usually repair its self, if it comes back the same way the doctor will then look at your cervix, take a biopsy and send it off, usually its not anything bad. they may freeze your cervix or perform the LEEP procedure, not that much to worry about, especially if it was not abnormal before (no matter what it is its been caught early.)

a lot of things could cause an abnormal pap. The yeast infection (or whatever) could have caused the abnormal pap, also if you had sex recently before the pap the penis cells could cause it.... i imagine also that if you masterbated it could leave abnormal (finger) cells in there too. There's also a long list of infections, diseases, and cancer too. Talk to your doctor about it.... Your doctor will probably be able to put you at ease more than anyone on yahoo answers. good luck.
