This may depend upon location. And is "common" meaning well known, easily seen, the highest population numbers or largest total biomass?
On land, the most common animal species in most locations is some form of rodent. The exact species varies, but Rattus norvegicus is very common. There are more species of rodents than of any other mammalian order; more than 400 genera and about 2,000 species are widely distributed throughout the world.
Earthworms may actually have larger populations than those of rodents, but due to their "underground" lifestyle, they are very difficult to count.
In fresh water the most common animal is usually an aquatic worm, especially Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri.
In oceans the most common animal is krill, especially Euphausia superba, unless one considers some of the plankton as animals.
Worldwide, microbes out-number animals and contain the largest biomass as well.
